Celebrating 50 years of cordial diplomatic relations in 2015, India has invited Singapore, through the National Book Development Council of Singapore (NBDCS), to be the Guest of Honour for the upcoming New Delhi World Book Fair (NDWBF), from 14 to 22 February 2015.
The Guest of Honour is one of the key highlights of the international book fair, which started in 1972 and has become one of the major calendar events in the publishing world. NDWBF is also India’s oldest book fair.
Participation in NDWBF will raise Singapore’s profile in the regional publishing landscape, as well as provide recognition for local authors, illustrators, storytellers, book designers, related technology applications, and publishers, creating opportunities to tap into the Indian market, considered the seventh largest publishing industry in the world.
NBDCS will project manage the event and coordinate the programmes with the support of NAC and local publishers.
Singapore’s participation in NDWBF will provide local major stakeholders and players a rare opportunity to showcase our literary artists and reach out to the Indian market, particularly in areas such as co-publications, selling of rights, translation projects, and promoting Singaporean titles to the Indian mass market.
India publishes an approximate 900,000 books a year across 30 languages, with its publishing industry estimated at about USD$2 billion and an annual growth rate of about 30%. The All India Index to English Books in Print (AIIEBIP) lists about 200,000 titles, making India the third largest publisher of English titles. India is also the only country to have been the Guest of Honour of the Frankfurt Book Fair twice, in 1986 and 2006.
