Bridging Borders: The SEA Lit Project

In the spirit of encouraging such intercultural dialogue, the Singapore Book Council has launched a new programme – Bridging Borders: The SEA Lit Project. Through a series of talks, discussions and translation projects, the initiative aims to foster a greater understanding of our respective literature and cultures. It also sets out to deepen the engagement between our writers and literary communities. 

The inaugural Bridging Borders will kick off in Yangon, Myanmar from 3 to 6 April 2019. A delegation of writers, illustrators and publishers from Singapore will meet their counterparts and take part in various programmes over four days, including school workshops, public readings and a literary forum. The Singapore and Myanmar writers will also be paired up to work together on a creative project. The final works will be launched in September in Singapore. ကမ္ဘာပေါ်တွင် ယဉ်ကျေးမှုအရသော်လည်းကောင်း၊ ဘာသာစကားအရသော်လည်းကောင်း ကွဲပြားမှုအမြင့်ဆုံး ဒေသများ အနက် အရှေ့တောင်အာရှဒေသသည် တစ်ခုအပါအဝင်ဖြစ်ပြီး ဘာသာစကားပေါင်း ရာနှင့်ချီ၍ ရေးသားပြောဆို နေကြ သည့် နေရာလည်းဖြစ်ပါသည်။ ဒေသတစ်ခုလုံး၏ ကိုယ်ပိုင်ဟန်ကို တစ်ခုတည်းအဖြစ် စုပေါင်း၍ရွေးထုတ်ပြရန် ခက် သည်ဟုဆိုရခြင်းမှာ တစ်နည်းအားဖြင့် ထိုသို့ကွဲပြားခြားနားမှု အားကောင်းနေခြင်းကြောင့်သာဖြစ်ပါသည်။ သို့ရာတွင် စာပေတည်းဟူသော စင်မြင့်က ထိုမတူကွဲပြားသည့်လူမျိုးများ၊ ယဉ်ကျေးမှုများကို ပေါင်းကူးပေးနိုင်မည့်အရာ ဖြစ်လာနိုင် သည့်အပြင် ဒေသတစ်ခုလုံးအပေါ် ယဉ်ကျေးမှုအရ နားလည်ပေးနိုင်စွမ်းကို အားကောင်းလာစေနိုင်မည်လည်းဖြစ်ပါသည်။

ထို့ကြောင့် ယဉ်ကျေးမှုအပြန်အလှန် နှီးနှောဖလှယ်မှုကို မြှင့်တင်ပေးလိုသည့် စေတနာဖြင့် စင်္ကာပူနိုင်ငံ စာပေကောင်စီက ကြီးမှူး၍ “နယ်နိမိတ်များ ပေါင်းကူးခြင်း - အရှေ့တောင်အာရှ စာပေ စီမံကိန်း” (Bridging Borders: The SEA Lit Project) ဟုအမည်ရသည့် အစီအစဉ်သစ်ကို မိတ်ဆက်ကျင်းပဖြစ်ခဲ့ပါသည်။ ကျွန်ုပ်တို့တွင် ရှိနှင့်နေသည့် စာပေနှင့် ယဉ်ကျေးမှုအမျိုးမျိုးကို ပိုမိုနားလည်လာနိုင်စေရန် ရည်သန်၍ ဟောပြောပွဲများ၊ ဆွေးနွေးပွဲများ၊ ဘာသာပြန် စီမံကိန်း များကို ကျင်းပပေးခဲ့ပါသည်။ ထို့ပြင် ကျွန်ုပ်တို့နိုင်ငံအသီးသီးရှိ စာရေးဆရာများနှင့် စာပေအသိုင်းအဝိုင်းများကြား ဆက်နွယ်နေမှုကို ပိုမိုနက်ရှိုင်းလာစေရန်လည်း ရည်ရွယ်ပါသည်။

ယင်းနယ်နိမိတ်များ ပေါင်းကူးခြင်းဖွင့်ပွဲကို မြန်မာနိုင်ငံ၊ ရန်ကုန်မြို့၌ ဧပြီ ၃ ရက်မှ ၆ ရက်နေ့အထိ ကျင်းပသွားမည် ဖြစ်ပါသည်။ စင်္ကာပူနိုင်ငံမှ စာရေးဆရာများ၊ ရုပ်ပြရေးဆွဲသည့် ကာတွန်းဆရာများ၊ ထုတ်ဝေသူများနှင့် ၎င်းတို့၏ ကိုယ်စားလှယ်တော်များသည် မြန်မာနိုင်ငံမှ အလားတူစာပေပညာရှင်များနှင့် တွေ့ဆုံ၍ လေးရက်တာ ကျင်းပမည့် အစီအစဉ်အသီးသီးတွင် ပါဝင်ဆွေးနွေးသွားကြမည်ဖြစ်ပါသည်။ ယင်းအစီအစဉ်များတွင် စာသင်ကျောင်း အလုပ်ရုံဆွေးနွေးပွဲများ၊ ပြည်သူ့စာဖတ်ပွဲများနှင့် စာပေဟစ်တိုင်ကဏ္ဍတို့ ပါဝင်သွားမည်ဖြစ်ပါသည်။ စာပေအနုပညာ ဖန်တီးမှု စီမံကိန်းတစ်ခုနှင့်ပတ်သက်၍ စင်္ကာပူနိုင်ငံနှင့် မြန်မာနိုင်ငံတို့မှ စာရေးဆရာများ လက်တွဲလုပ်ဆောင်သွားကြမည် ဖြစ်ပြီး နောက်ဆုံးပိတ် လက်ရာများကို စင်္ကာပူနိုင်ငံ၌ စက်တင်ဘာလထဲတွင် မိတ်ဆက်ပြသပေးသွားမည်ဖြစ်ပါသည်။ ထပ်မံသိရှိလိုပါက www.bookcouncil.sg  သို့ ဝင်ရောက်လေ့လာနိုင်ပါသည်။

Write What You Know... Heroes and Villains!

In this one-hour long writing workshop, the authors of the Sherlock Sam series of children’s detective novels will help kids create their very own super-powered heroes and dastardly villains! Children will learn the basics of creating exciting characters to use in their very own stories.

My Simple Picture Book

Featuring: Lee Kow Fong 

Have you ever wanted to write and draw your own picture-book? Why not join Singapore picture-book illustrator Lee Kow Fong in this one-hour interactive workshop? He will guide participants through the simple process of doing a storyboard and folding a small book with an A3 paper.

Voices From Singapore: Spotlight on Poetry

Three Singaporean poets will share about their roots in poetry and how they have developed their voices over the years. They will read excerpts from their books and give their insight on the creative process of a poet writing in different languages – Chinese, English and Tamil – in a multicultural society.

Voices From Singapore: Spotlight on Fiction

Moderator: Su Myat Htay

What makes a good story? What are the challenges of writing fiction? Join the two authors from Singapore as they discuss their experiences as fiction writers, in particular on how they create a believable world, compelling narratives and diverse characters. They will also be reading excerpts from their books in Malay and Tamil.

Their final works will be published as part of a special presentation at the Asian Festival of Children’s Content in Singapore in September (5-8 Sep). Myanmar will be the Country of Focus.

PALACE OF LITERATURE (SARPAY BEIKMAN)

Sarpay Beikman was originated as the Burmese Translation Society in 1947. Its first President was Prime Minister U Nu, who started a Burmese translation job at Judson College (now University of Yangon). The purpose was to translate world culture, literature, education for the Burmese public. In 1963 the society was absorbed into the Ministry of Information's Printing and Publishing Enterprise as the Sarpay Beikman Literature House, and the mandate was extended to encourage local writers and to print and publish books of all types. The society presents the annual Sarpay Beikman Manuscript Awards and Burma National Literature Awards for excellent new unpublished and published writing in various categories.
