Food was inextricably linked to traditional ideas of femininity and patriarchal practices of gender oppression. While the nursing woman was celebrated as the loving maternal figure, the consuming woman was seen as a transgressive actor, who had crossed social boundaries in becoming a desiring subject. This reading workshop will explore how food figures today in post-colonial women’s literary texts in the construction of modern female ethnic and trans/national identities. Selections from women’s texts from Singapore, Australia, Pakistan and the Caribbean will be read.

In this workshop, Anya Goncharova from Penguin Random House North Asia provides insights into what international editors are looking for, and what it takes to catch the eye of an international publisher. She will give an overview of the editorial process, taking participants through the stages of acquisitions, content edits, line edits, and final proofs, showing how each phase in the work is managed by top international publishing houses. Based on her own experience in the publishing industry, Anya will share tips on recent trends, as well as dos and don’ts for writers hoping to break into the international English language market. Participants will be given the opportunity to share their work, and to offer peer edits on the works of other writers during the course of the workshop. Participants are invited to bring a work of prose (fiction and non-fiction are both welcome) of no more than 1,500 words with which they can gain some hands-on experience during the workshop.

From Frankenstein’s creature to the pontianak, monsters are eternal tropes in literature and folk narratives across cultures. The diversity of literary monsters is only rivalled by the multitude of functions they serve – to scare us, to invite sympathy and to test the limits of the human imagination. This reading workshop explores the multifarious meanings behind the contemporary monsters as imagined by authors hailing from Muslim cultures – a productive venture considering how Islamophobia in today’s context has sometimes led to Muslims themselves being imagined as grotesque or monstrous.

The books that we read situate us. The idea of a national literature foregrounds the nation. In today’s hyper-connected world, is our imagination limited by this label? Would it be more viable to embrace literary frames that situate the nation within its region, such as Southeast Asia, or even the world at large? This panel of literary critics, educators and writers will discuss the borders of our literary world and speculate on new modes of relating to others.
